Up to twenty percent of grain that goes into storage in southern Africa is lost before it can be used, wasting millions of tons of product every year. A significant amount of grain is also never graded, which lowers the overall price of the grain and inhibits export.

Strategic Partnership Grantee Demonstrates Blue Box Technology to USAID In Pretoria

On September 15, 2015, Intertek Laboratories demonstrated the “Blue Box” technology at the USAID Southern Africa mission in Pretoria, South Africa. The Blue Box is an affordable precision tool kit composed of sampling and testing instruments that provides on the spot quality control to monitor crop or grain condition. It can be used both in the field and in storage facilities at any stage in the value chain.

Supporting Companies to Attend MAGIC: Naked Ape Style in Johannesburg

In February 2016, USAID will again support a number of companies from Southern Africa to attend the MAGIC Las Vegas fashion trade show. Based on the success of last year’s participation at MAGIC, USAID is organizing an integrated “Sourcing Africa Pavilion” where textile and apparel companies from Southern, East, and West Africa will jointly exhibit. A number of leading Lesotho and South African apparel companies have already committed to attend MAGIC.

Over 250 people attended the opening of Source Africa in Cape Town on June 10, 2015. Abisha Tembo from the Department of Trade and Industry welcomed guests while the US Counsel General in Cape Town, Teddy B. Taylor, opened the trade show and introduced keynote speaker, Assistant United States Trade Representative for Apparel and Textiles, Gail Strickler in the presence of Mark Wilt, Director of the Regional Economic Growth Office and Acting Mission Director Alonzo Wind.

Source Africa 2015 Hosts Media Roundtable and Sells Out Exhibition Space

Source Africa 2015 Preparations in Full Swing

Following the successful USAID-USTR AGOA Renewal and Source Africa Reception co-hosted by the Embassy of Botswana in Washington DC in mid-April, the Southern Africa Trade Hub held a number of consultative meetings with the Assistant United States Trade Representative for Apparel and Textiles (AUSTR) and other stakeholders. Meetings covered the promotion of Source Africa with major US and European buyers, African manufacturers, and the international media; the finalization of seminar and business roundtable speakers; and overall coordination and planning for the trade event.

Trade Hub Visits Two Footwear Manufacturing Companies in Durban, South Africa

On April 16, the Trade Hub visited two footwear manufacturing companies in Durban, South Africa that have been invited to attend Source Africa 2015, the major textiles, apparel, and footwear trade show event occurring June 9-11 in Cape Town. The visit was escorted by the South African Footwear and Leather Export Council and offered the opportunity to assess the factories and their capacities. Neither factory is currently exporting under AGOA, but both are interested in the export market and hope to pursue business leads at Source Africa.

Making MAGIC for Southern African Companies in the US

The Trade Hub supported seven apparel companies from Botswana and Lesotho to participate in MAGIC, the largest fashion trade show in the world, in Las Vegas from February 17-19. The companies met major buyers, large retailers, and importers for the US market such as Target, Ralph Lauren, the Perry Ellis Group, Teamwork, Happy Chef, and Sanmar.

Trade Hub Supports SADC with National Action Programs on Investment in Member States

SADC has requested support from USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub to carry forward their regional investment policy framework program. After five years of development in cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the EU, the SADC Secretariat has completed a regional investment policy framework that will be formally adopted on July 22, 2015 in Johannesburg.

Workshop Held in Durban, South Africa to Demystify Exporting to the US

In close collaboration with the US Consulate in Durban and Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN), USAID's Southern Africa Trade Hub hosted a Regional Export and Trade Facilitation Workshop at the Sun Coast Conference Center in Durban on April 15. Over 90 participants came to the event, including the South African business chambers, the business and manufacturing communities, regional traders, and local government officials.

Change Management Training Prepares Countries for National Single Window

USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub hosted Change Management training for senior managers from government and parastatal organizations from April 28-30, 2015, in Swakopmund, Namibia. The training provided future members of the Single Window Technical Committee with a common understanding of effective change management strategy and how it will help to ensure smooth implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) program in Namibia.

Trade and Industry Policy Strategies Annual Forum 2015 Held in Johannesburg

This year’s Trade and Industry Policy Strategies (TIPS) Annual Forum was co-sponsored by USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub, taking place at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg on July 14-15, 2015. TIPS, a South African think tank, contributes to policy development through research and dialogue, and the TIPS Annual Forum brought together key researchers side-by-side with government policy-makers to foster broad dialogue. More than 150 delegates were in attendance, including academics and members of the research community; private sector actors from agriculture and industry; government representatives; and delegates from international organizations and donors.

Roundtable on Trade Facilitation Hosted by US Embassy South Africa

On April 23, the Trade Hub’s Trade Facilitation Director attended a roundtable discussion on regional trade at the residence of the Deputy Chief of Mission for the US Embassy in Pretoria. Representatives of USAID and the State Department joined the US Customs and Border Protection Attaché and representatives of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in a dialogue to discuss the benefits of implementing trade facilitation measures in line with the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation.

SADC Sanitary and Phytosanitary Strategies for Improving Food Safety and Promoting Regional Trade

Gaborone, BOTSWANA: Today’s event celebrated 12 months of cooperation between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat’s Sanitary and Phytosanitary Programme. The results of this collaboration are Regional Sanitary and Phytosanitary Strategies to ensure that consumers are being supplied with food products that are safe to eat, plants and animals are protected from plant pests and animal diseases and at the same time improving safe regional and international trade.
