zamaceOn December 15, 2015, the Hon. Given Lubinda, Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, commissioned the launch of services by the Zambian Agricultural Commodities Exchange (ZAMACE).

Warehouse inspection and certification services, a trading platform, and the issuing of warehouse receipts are central to the services that will be provided by ZAMACE.

USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub has supported ZAMACE to develop a Warehouse Receipts System for Zambia that enables farmers to deposit grain in certified warehouses and receive a receipt that can be used as collateral for finance.

In an article on the launch, the Zambia Daily Mail covered the achievement and noted that 300,000 tons of warehouse space will now be available to receive grain and issue warehouse receipts. It was highlighted at the event that development of the Warehouse Receipts System would not have been possible without USAID and the Southern Africa Trade Hub.

The announcement by Minister Lubinda (third from right) that the Zambian government will support the free trade of grains and oilseeds in the 2016 harvest season was welcomed by the audience
