USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub has been assisting the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) in Zambia with the establishment of an online management information system. The new system, called “Seed-Lab,” improves the services available at SCCI and will automate the entire seed inspection and verification process in the country.
Successful implementation of the new system will reduce private sector costs for certification and the corporate burden involved in accessing SCCI's services. With the implementation of the SADC Harmonised Seed Regulations Protocol, it is expected that the private sector will increase investment as long as costs for participation are manageable and the responsible public authority is proactive and capable of providing services as mandated by law.
