29 August 2012
From July 16-17, SATH conducted a trade data analysis workshop for government officials in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The workshop provided participants with skills in obtaining and analyzing trade and tariff data. In the course of the training, a Tanzania Trade Snapshot was developed which provides detailed information about the structure and patters of Tanzania's external trade and tariffs. Tanzania is a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is progressing towards a full free trade area (FTA), and is also participating in negotiations towards a Tripartite FTA with the East African Community (EAC) and Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). These skills will allow Tanzania to analyze policy decisions related to the SADC FTA and Tripartite.

Warehouse Receipts System Being Developed in Malawi

29 August 2012
aceSATH is assisting the Malawi Agricultural Commodity Exchange (ACE) to develop a system of warehouse receipts which would enable producers to obtain credit on the basis of grain stored in certified warehouses, allowing them to select the best time to sell, thus potentially increasing profits.

Across the Southern Africa region, smallholder farmers sell their produce (grain) shortly after the harvest each year when markets are in surplus and prices are low. If they delayed selling by a month or two, they could gain higher prices.
