Trade Hub Takes Regional Feed Manufacturers to the US
24 April 2012
From March 5-9, SATH and the World Institute for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), a SATH grantee, facilitated the training of ten regional companies on animal feed manufacturing techniques, processes and trends at the International Grains Program (IGP) at Kansas State University (KSU). This is the first time feed manufacturers from the region have trained in the US.
Participating companies account for approximately 90% of commercial poultry and feed producers in the Southern African region. The group consisted of three Zambian, two Malawian, one Namibian and four South African company representatives. The companies are vertically integrated animal feed manufacturers and poultry producers in the region.
The comprehensive program offered by IGP included factory and laboratory visits. “The course covered a wide spectrum of very important subjects, and the diversity in the group attending the course insured an insight into a very wide range of topics. The course presenters were very helpful in answering questions, and the visits to the factories were impressive,” said Cillié Taljaard of Extru Feeds in South Africa. “I am currently involved in the extrusion of soy and maize, and therefore I found the extrusion part of the course most interesting and relevant to my daily business. The energy saving techniques were also something that I could apply to my current daily manufacturing processes.”
There was extensive interaction between the delegates and sharing of lessons learned. All delegates expressed interest in advancing their studies with IGP, either through a follow up course in 2013 or through KSU’s distance learning program (details on their website). The delegates will also promote the training within their own companies, and it is expected that applications for the 2013 course will increase.
SATH and WISHH also arranged for a visit to the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA - www.afia.org) and the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA - www.fda.gov ) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). Discussions were held around feed regulation in the US and approved ingredient listings. At CVM, the group was guided through the laboratory facilities and briefed on CVM’s research and inspection roles.
Based on positive feedback from the training, IGP requested SATH assistance to link them with a regional university to explore the possibility of offering both short and advanced courses on feed manufacturing techniques in the region.
