Zambia’s Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry has kicked off a three-week publicity campaign ahead of the May 29, 2020 public launch of the Zambia Trade Information Portal. The minister announced the campaign to members of the press on May 8, 2020. Speaking from a government complex in Lusaka, he described the portal, which was developed with USAID TradeHub support, as instrumental to the Zambian government’s push to facilitate cross-border trade. Key to this facilitation effort, he added, was to make trade-related information accessible electronically, a requirement of Zambia’s obligations under its Trade Facilitation Agreement with the World Trade Organization. The minister thanked USAID and the World Bank Group, which developed the template for the portal, for their collaborative efforts and commitment to ensuring Zambian ownership of the final product. Begun in November 2019, the portal is designed to lower trade barriers for Zambian importers and exporters as well as their counterparts internationally. The publicity campaign aims to raise awareness of the portal’s resources and will include television, radio, and print media coverage as well as social media outreach.
