The USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub presented an overview of the African Growth and Opportunity Act at a July 9, 2020 webinar organized by the East London, South Africa-based Border-Kei Chamber of Business. The webinar included participants from 12 Border-Kei Chamber of Business members based in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The event was part of a series exploring how businesses in the country can identify export opportunities during the ongoing pandemic-related lockdown. A USAID Trade Hub representative gave an overview of the program’s objectives as well as a summary of its support to regional companies, including small and medium enterprises seeking access to the U.S. market through the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The presentation comes as part of the USAID TradeHub’s support to business membership organizations like the Border-Kei Chamber of Business. Through them, the USAID TradeHub has been working throughout the region to build the capacity of potential exporters, including by linking these firms with certification bodies in the United States. These efforts, in turn, aim to boost the value proposition of business membership organizations, which will sustain the work of the USAID TradeHub beyond its projected end in October 2021. Building on the July 9 webinar, the USAID TradeHub has been exploring opportunities for Border-Kei Chamber of Business members to participate in a USAID-supported program to facilitate exports of personal protective equipment from southern Africa to the United States. The USAID TradeHub is also working with the Border-Kei Chamber of Business to identify other potential export opportunities in the apparel and agricultural sectors.
