Trade Hub Grant to Improve Hybrid Maize Access in Malawi

w1The USAID Southern Africa Trade Hub has provided a grant of US$100,000 to Capstone Seeds SA (PTY) to accelerate commercial access to drought-tolerant hybrid maize seed in Malawi. Capstone, an independent South African seed company, will now enter into a joint venture with Peacock Enterprises Ltd of Malawi to multiply and market "CAP9001" in Malawi.This variety was developed specifically with the needs of the region in mind, to address productivity and maximize yield potential in small scale, rain-fed, drought-vulnerable farming systems. Approximately 80 metric tons of certified hybrid seed maize will be produced through this grant project. This grant not only supports the production of 80 metric tons of new hybrid seed in Malawi, but also pairs independent seed companies in South Africa and Malawi to bring new seed products to the market effectively

USAID met with Malawi banks and insurers to establish their key individual and collective requirements to finance the warehouse receipt system. Based on this feedback, USAID created comprehensive documentation and held a series of workshops and trainings to enable funding for the system so that farmers can receive the optimum return on their hard work and efforts.

aceSATH is assisting the Malawi Agricultural Commodity Exchange (ACE) to develop a system of warehouse receipts which would enable producers to obtain credit on the basis of grain stored in certified warehouses, allowing them to select the best time to sell, thus potentially increasing profits.

Across the Southern Africa region, smallholder farmers sell their produce (grain) shortly after the harvest each year when markets are in surplus and prices are low. If they delayed selling by a month or two, they could gain higher prices.

As South Africa is the largest producer of maize with the most developed market, the South African value chain information may serve as a benchmark for other countries in SADC.

NAMPO Participants Estimate Deals of up to 29 Million USD

nampoIn providing feedback on their experience, the 52 delegates that participated in the 2011 NAMPO Harvest Day Agricultural show in May, estimate that a total of up to US$29 million in deals could be realized as a result of their participation. SATH coordinated regional participation from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique

Most of the deals involve irrigation equipment, inputs such as fertilizer, farming equipment (tractors), storage and grain handling equipment, farm fencing, implements, processing and animal feed manufacturing equipment.
