Soy

For soy, there is consistent, significant demand from South Africa and the rest of the region with an estimated aggregate shortfall of over one million metric tons (MT) per annum in all countries in Southern Africa, with the exception of Zambia, which is self-sufficient. The key countries that are in a position to supply this demand are Zambia and Mozambique.

Trade Hub Takes Regional Feed Manufacturers to the US

regionalfeedFrom March 5-9, SATH and the World Institute for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), a SATH grantee, facilitated the training of ten regional companies on animal feed manufacturing techniques, processes and trends at the International Grains Program (IGP) at Kansas State University (KSU). This is the first time feed manufacturers from the region have trained in the US.

The objective of the study is to identify and analyze sources of price and market information in key countries in the Southern African region. The analysis of the information systems focuses on the quality of their service offerings and the efficacies of their business models. The study also identifies price and market information gaps for the Southern African Trade Hub (SATH) strategic value chains as well as other staple foods and commodities. From the analysis, recommendations are made to SATH to encourage private sector/commercial actors to cover gaps in the market.

Governments in SADC and elsewhere have attempted to use controls on imports and exports to improve food security through their impacts on food prices and availability in the domestic market.

Are such policies helpful in solving the genuine and pressing problems of food security in the region?

This report examines recent global and regional experience to draw some lessons about the impacts on food security of domestic trade policies as they have been used in the region.

Mozambique Buyer-Seller Mission Spurs Private Sector Negotiations

In line with the SATH demand led market solution approach, SATH has been working with Tiger Brands, a leading South African food processor, to investigate new regional supplies of groundnuts and canning beans. The Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) also approached SATH to facilitate the supply of new soybean varieties in the region. In response, SATH partnered with the USAID-funded AgriFuturo project and Michigan State University Collaborative Bean Research Support Program and led a buyer-seller mission to the northern Mozambican provinces of Nampula and Zambezia. Tiger Brands was joined in the mission by SeedCo Zimbabwe, a regional seed producer specialising in hybrid maize and soybean varieties, and SA Groundnut Marketing, a groundnut trader and seed supplier.

NAMPO Participants Estimate Deals of up to 29 Million USD

nampoIn providing feedback on their experience, the 52 delegates that participated in the 2011 NAMPO Harvest Day Agricultural show in May, estimate that a total of up to US$29 million in deals could be realized as a result of their participation. SATH coordinated regional participation from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique

Most of the deals involve irrigation equipment, inputs such as fertilizer, farming equipment (tractors), storage and grain handling equipment, farm fencing, implements, processing and animal feed manufacturing equipment.
