Little Tazewell addresses workshop on Good Regulatory PracticesUSAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub, in partnership with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the Partnership for Trade Facilitation (PTF) Standards Alliance program, sponsored a two-day workshop on Exchange on Good Regulatory Practices (GRPs) organized in collaboration with the SADC Secretariat.

The workshop provided a platform for SADC and US experts on standards and technical regulations to exchange views and experiences on GRPs. Held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 1-2, 2015, the workshop was attended by over 40 participants. In addition to two participants from each of the 15 SADC Member States, there were representatives from SADC Cooperation in Standardization (SADCSTAN) and the SADC Technical Regulations Liaison Committee (SADC TRLC), two representatives of SADC Secretariat, experts from US private sector, US Standards Development Organizations, USTR and US Office of Management and Budget-Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the US Embassy in South Africa, USDA and USAID/Southern Africa as well as a representative from USAID East Africa Trade and Investment Hub.Welcoming the delegates to the workshop, Elsie Meintjies, the SADC Secretariat Senior Programme Officer for Standards, Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Metrology (SQAM) thanked the USAID Trade Hub and ANSI for sponsoring and organizing the workshop. “The timing of this workshop is very important as this is the first activity that SADCSTAN and SADCTRLC are holding together after the two SADC Technical Barrier on Trade (TBT) structures signed an agreement cooperating in an effort to improve regional and international trade”, she said.

In his keynote address at the workshop, Littleton Tazewell, USAID Southern Africa Deputy Mission Director said, “Realizing the ever-increasing importance of standards in facilitating regional and international trade, USAID is working with SADC to enhance the region’s quality infrastructure and standardization process.” He added that USAID was proud to work closely with ANSI, SADC and its member states to support efforts to enhance the standards development process, strengthen the legal and regulatory framework in the region, and enhance private sector outreach and communication on the issues.
