tradehub logoThe Trade Hub met with the newly formed Botswana Textiles and Clothing Association (BTCA) to discuss potential strategic partnerships between South African retailers/sourcing executives and the Botswana textiles and garment industry.
Currently, Botswana textile companies are manufacturing mainly under government contract.  There are few local textile and clothing manufacturers exporting to the South African market or beyond (to the US or the European Union).
 
During the meeting it was agreed that producing for South Africa retailers would make the industry more competitive in terms of improving quality, pricing, delivery, and flexibility.

The Trade Hub and the BTCA discussed the necessary production criteria for South African retailers to source from Botswana manufacturers on a cut-make-trim (CMT) basis. Products like knit shirts, work wear, kitchen towels, and jeans have the potential to be manufactured in Botswana for export to and sell in the South African market. 

It was agreed the BTCA will profile interested member companies and they will then be matched to select South African retailers.

As a result of this initial matchmaking, South African retailers will be invited to send audit teams to evaluate manufacturers and determine next steps for sale and export. The advantage of this type of business-to-business cooperation is the Botswana textile manufacturers can build their capacity, improve competitiveness, and generate potential sales through direct market interactions with target retailers in South Africa.
