MAGICOn December 17, 2015, USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub participated in a conference call with the Management Support and Technical Assistance Services Project (MSTAS) and USAID’s East and West Africa Trade and Investment Hubs.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss planning and coordination for the joint “Sourcing Africa Pavilion” at the upcoming MAGIC textile, apparel, and footwear trade show that will pave the way for Source Africa 2016 being held June 7-9, 2016 in Cape Town, South Africa.

MSTAS and the three Trade Hubs covered issues including booth space/allocation, marketing and communications messaging for the Pavilion, B2B meetings and preparation, and the design and configuration of the Pavilion. Each of the Hubs also provided an update on companies expected to participate in MAGIC: the West Africa Hub confirmed participation of three out of five companies to date; the Southern Africa Hub confirmed six out of eight companies; and the East Africa Hub indicated that they expect 27 companies to participate.

The three Trade Hubs also exchanged ideas on developing Pan-African messaging and marketing materials for MAGIC. There was consensus on the need to promote the advantages and opportunities conferred on African producers by the recently extended African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). It was also suggested that additional emphasis be placed not only on cost advantages but on the enhanced service capacity, improved quality and production efficiency, and customer service provided by African companies already benefiting from AGOA.

A follow-up conference call to continue coordination and update the group on progress will be held during the first week of January 2016.
