In February 2016, USAID will again support a number of companies from Southern Africa to attend MAGIC Las Vegas, the largest fashion trade show in the world. Based on the success of last year’s participation at MAGIC, USAID is organizing an integrated “Sourcing Africa Pavilion” where textile and apparel companies from Southern, East, and West Africa will jointly exhibit.
In mid-December 2015, apparel experts from USAID’s Management Support and Technical Assistance Services (MSTAS) project, supported by USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub, traveled to Maseru, Lesotho to meet with the Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) and visit a number of apparel factories interested in joining USAID’s Sourcing Africa Pavilion in Las Vegas. Among others, the team met with Luqy Manufacturing, whose attendance at MAGIC 2015 generated a number of large orders, as well as Tlotliso Holdings, which also successfully exhibited at last year’s event. Site visits were also held with Formosa Textiles, Mauri Garments, CGM/Prestix, Hippo Knitting, and Tradelink.
It is expected that at least eight companies from Southern Africa will form part of the Sourcing Africa Pavilion. Exhibiting at MAGIC promotes companies to US retailers, sourcing companies, and other buyers. It will also help companies engage in early matchmaking in advance of the Source Africa 2016 trade show to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from June 7-9, 2016.
