Zambia National Enquiry PointDuring the week of February 16-20, the Trade Hub conducted staff training for the National Enquiry Point (NEP) of the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) and commissioned equipment procured by the Trade Hub for the NEP.


The activity is part of the Trade Hub's technical assistance program to the Zambia Bureau of Standards under the Partnership for Trade Facilitation facility, which is aimed at supporting and enhancing standards and technical regulations and improving the effectiveness of the WTO TBT Enquiry Point.


The WTO TBT Agreement, of which Zambia is a signatory, requires that each member state shall maintain an NEP to attend to enquiries and provide the relevant documents regarding technical regulations standards and conformity assessment procedures.


The training emphasized how to effectively run an Enquiry Point helpdesk with the aid of a template enquiry form. According to participants, the training sessions enlightened them on their expected functions and how they can support each other in their various sections. They also developed greater appreciation for the relevance of the NEP.

 

The Trade Hub procured two computers, a server, a multi-function color printer as well as office furniture for the ZABS NEP, and assisted the ZABS IT Department to set up and commission the equipment to ensure that it is fully functional. In addition to setting up an email address specifically for the NEP (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), recommendations were made to ZABS on enhancing the NEP functionality.


The Zambia NEP will be officially re-launched on April 8 in Lusaka, followed by an awareness workshop two days later in Kitwe.
