USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub is helping to establish an online management information system at the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI), the organization responsible for control and certification of the seed industry in Zambia. The new management information system, called “Seed-Lab,” will improve the services available at SCCI and will automate the entire seed inspection and verification process in the country.
Seed companies are required to apply for a seed grower license with the SCCI in order to sell seed in Zambia. The new management information system will allow seed companies to apply and be issued with that license online. The inspection and lab reports required for seed licenses will also be submitted through the online system, making the information directly available to the sector.
The Trade Hub is providing new hardware and support for the system, which is currently in the testing phase. Once full functionality is achieved and stakeholders in the seed industry are satisfied with the test results, an official launch will take place.
