USAID Mission Director Peter Trenchard From February 4-5, 2016, in Lilongwe, Malawi, USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub made a presentation to the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee of Malawi’s National Assembly.

The Trade Hub’s senior legal advisor and team presented their findings and recommendations on the harmonization of Malawi’s Seed Bill with the SADC Model Harmonized Seed Law: results of a review done with the Farmer’s Union of Malawi to ensure that Malawi’s legislation allows the country to take advantage of regional seed harmonization to release seed quickly and easily into the market.

Eighteen of the 20 members of the Committee were in attendance for the Trade Hub presentation, which was opened by USAID/Malawi’s Acting Mission Director, Peter Trenchard. The Farmer’s Union of Malawi (FUM) CEO, Prince Kapondamgaga, and the Chair of the Committee, the Hon. Felix Elia Humbe (MP), also provided remarks noting the importance of seed harmonization and the support provided by USAID.

During the afternoon session, the Trade Hub’s senior legal advisor conducted a workshop entitled, "From Policy to Law" to build capacity of the committee and cover the finer points of the law-making process and the need for an underlying policy prior to enactment of a law.
